As an American, I have heard arguments for both ways on this question. I believe that in order for the EU to reach the status of a true superpower it will first have to overcome many obstacles.

Possibly, they would need to work out their many internal differences first. They have a larger economy and a larger population than the United States, but their combined military forces are small in comparison to the U.S, especially their navies, which are critical if you want to project military power around the world. If the EU worked out some of their biggest differences and committed to increasing their military power, then they would definitely become a true superpower, they're already an economic superpower.

The plan is the EU and the North American Union (America, Canada, Mexico) come together and form one gov.=New World Order

Ever is a long time...
Economically the Euro stands a chance of becoming the major global currency significantly benefiting the countries using the Euro.
As for a superpower it depends on what the definition of that is. Militarily I doubt it. The constituant countries all have their own views, foreign policies and histories that would make a combined and functional military exceptionally unlikely.

Probably yes. There are talks of it intending to abolish the UK and all other member states in July 2008. God help us.
