Anti-Communists wanted to see the advance of Soviet style Communism halted. They would have regarded forcing the North Vietnamese to stop supporting and trying to overthrow the South Vietnamese government as a victory.

The Domino Theory held that when one country 'fell' to communism, neighbouring countries would follow suit. The idea was to prevent communism from reaching South Vietnam and moving into Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. The merits of that theory are still debated.
