Question:
Why do people support the EU?
2010-07-20 04:45:39 UTC
I'm from the UK (England) and i personally would like to scrap the EU. Our main exports are services and as far as i know we don't receive anything from being in the union. Leaving wouldn't really effect our economy and we could fall back on treaties similar to Australia's with the EU.
We pay billions each year, and what of that ends up in the EU aid pot, goes to the "poorer" members of the EU, rather than the truly needing countries in the world.
People say it's good for trade, they support our farmers and it was originally a way to eradicate the chance of a third world (european) war. To that i have to say we don't really produce much to trade, it's becoming less viable to have a farm in the uk, since EU competitiveness has saturated markets and driven down prices, and yes many many years ago the thought of another war seemed possible, but now everyone has nuclear deterrents, what would the point be.
We are one of the most highly taxed countries in Europe and pay billions to be a part of a 'club' we have very little political sway in, even more so now that the union has centralised power further with the lisbon treaty ( a treaty that was more or less forced upon all members, and underhanded tactics were employed to ensure it went through).
The only thing we really benefit from would be the avaliable skilled EU workforce. Though, is paying so much to be a part of the union really worth saving a few hours off hassle with paper work.
I'd love to hear from other UK citizens, but replies from anyone within the EU would be good.

I love it because it is, to date, the single greatest supra-national institution with real power. As such it is the most decisive step that mankind has managed to take in the direction of a post-nation-state world, a world that everyone will have to make the transition to in the 21st century, possibly even the next 50 years. Technology is advancing far too rapidly for national borders to maintain any relevance for much longer. They hurt global human welfare more than they help it.

Even before the referendum in Ireland has taken place, EU circles and Irish Government Ministers have said they will ignore a majority No! vote. Irish Government figures have also said it will make no difference even if the electorate reject ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. This is weeks before the Referendum setting up a double ‘heads we win, tails you lose’ state of affairs to dampen the growing No! vote in Ireland. Even an Irish MEP proposed in the so-called European Parliament that a No! vote should be ignored.

The Lisbon Treaty, or more correctly the EU Constitution, is the last Treaty. There will be no more. If put in place the Constitution gives a blank cheque to the Federalists and their HQ in Brussels to do virtually anything they like. Witness the talk about what powers a President of the EU would have which are not spelled out in the Constitution. The same goes for the de facto EU Foreign Secretary. Neither the EU President nor EU Foreign Minister would be answerable to an electorate.

At the same time the EU’s Court of Justice has taken another decision to remove the right to collective bargaining which goes straight to the jugular of trade unions and all the people they represent. There have been two judgments given against the right to collective bargaining (Viking and Vaxholm). Added to these is the Ruffert case which bans a minimum wage under the Posted Workers Directive. And, that is before the extra powers this Court would be given by an EU Constitution. They are tasters of what is to come.

These are just two aspects of the direct attack on and removal of all forms of democracy. It has been the labour and trade union movement in Britain that has won many aspects of democracy including: the right to vote; elect and remove those who govern us; the welfare state; state education; the NHS; trial by jury; and many more aspects of national life.

Setting capitalism as the only system allowed is part of the EU Constitution. Already in place are Directives for privatisation of whole industries including railways and postal services. EU legislation is specifically designed to hand everything to big capital. In the pipeline is a Healthcare Directive to ‘open the market’ and would be the end of the NHS as a free service. The Commission is deliberately sitting on this Directive until after the Irish Referendum.

Britain is in the penultimate stage to join the euro single currency. This entails the government carrying out the strict criteria and draconian restrictions on public sector spending. This was a factor in the debacle over the 10p tax imposed on the lowest pay packets.

The alternative to all the above - Euro-federalism, the EU Constitution, EU dictaks, demise of democracy and attacks on the labour and trade union movement - is simple. Withdraw Britain from the EU. Then, Britain would not be subject to EU legislation or policies. This would enable international co-operation and trade with any country across the world rather than being restricted to the single or common market.

Instead of paying £6,000 million each year, equivalent to £115 million each week, into the EU Budget the money could be used to: improve the NHS; increase state pensions; sponsor apprenticeship schemes; provide smaller classes in schools; and fund wider support for technical and arts classes in schools. Taxes could be used to encourage manufacturing to provide jobs. Before Britain joined the Common market manufacturing, shipbuilding and mining were the backbone of the economy and millions were employed in these industries. Now manufactures and energy are imported.

Formal democracy, which entails electing MPs to parliament, should be returned to the position of the institution which governs Britain rather than an unaccountable Commission in Brussels.

The EU is UK's largest export market, and the fact that the EU exists may or may not be a partof the longest period of peace and stability we have had in Europe, or maybe t is just a coincidence. I also think the UK shoudl leave the EU as this forum gets uninformed questions like yours almost daily, and frankly the rest of Europe can progress faster and be more socially inclusive and wealth generating without the Brits holding 26 other countries back time and time again.... Its true Uk does not produce much in gobal terms, after all, who wants shoddy cars with the steering in the wrong place; or equipment that is measures in inches and feet....and a football team that .. and a Davis cup tennis team in 245rd position globally, and a cricket team that is 9th out of 11 in the world,

Very true, recently the EU has been pointless for the UK but I hope that with the new coalition government things can change. Cameron has said that there will be referendums before any treaties, that hand power from the UK government to Brussels, are signed and also that he wants to stop the UK falling into a federal Europe as well as having our military closer aligned to NATO rather than the EU. The EU has the potential to be a great thing for all involved but a serious of events on the UKs part as well as decisions in Brussels has hindered the progress of it. We need to find a balance with the EU, Britain has nearly always been either too close or too far away from the EU for us to receive any benefits from it.

one hundred%! we are able to all seem at Greece, eire, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium or perhaps the ecu as an entire and notice precisely the place it particularly is premiere us. the ecu can't even get the auditors to sign off on its books now and for the final 11 years that i understand of. dealing with between the biggest disaster ever with the financial equipment of maximum if no longer all of its member states and it nevertheless comes to a decision to pour 23 billion euros into distant places help(boost of 5%) finances to help commerce exterior the ecu with third international countries. There are basically 2 international places who income from that interior the ecu. Germany and France. As for the PIGS international places basically evaluate this. all of them accompanied the ecu dictates, now seem the place it has led them. the united kingdom no rely the occasion in government is doing a similar and seem at how we are paying the value for their folly! Cameron claimed he pronounced no to this recent bail out of Greece yet seem at what has occurred. no longer till 2013 does he recommend for that to take place. My buddy because of the fact of this we are going to and likewise that Greece is going to default besides and the money is basically going to hide undesirable banking practices fostered by the ecu. ecu politicians, its politburo, our very own politicians are no longer something yet mendacity con artist and thieves. the faster we unload them and the ecu the extra advantageous off we'd be. the united kingdom's commerce and export became lots extra advantageous in the previous we joined the easy industry(no longer the ecu) than it has ever been because of the fact. Now it has enhance into the ecu it particularly is a lot some distance worse. we ought to get out NOW!

The only people who support the EU are politicians and those idiots who believe all they say. I have yet to meet anyone who thinks that the EU is any good .

What skilled EU workforce is that? i have yet to meet a skilled worker from the EU especially the eastern bloc countries. I know what i'm talking about I've had to deal with their abortions and fix them. Most of the polish brickies and plasterers either had wonky eyes or their levels were bent like a banana. And any ******** can shovel shi't western europe doesn't need migrant labour either from the east. The EU is there to serve countries like France and Germany, in the mid 80's the EU gave Ireland some money for new roads, the irish can lay road and tarmac in their sleep and what was the debt they had to re-pay? how about 25,000 highly skilled workers loosing their jobs to 2nd rate "skilled" labour from overseas. If germany and France loved the EU so much then they should take most of the migrants. Ireland and Britain is only a dumping ground for all of the Eu's trash. Why do people support the EU? because they must be profiting from it. The average joe doesn't

People who support the EU do not have a clue what the ultimate goal is, believe everything the government tells them and have been watching too much TV.
